Works to completely resurface a major carriageway in Lichfield are set to start next week, thanks to a £1,150,000 county council investment in the area.

The scheme, commencing today (Monday 3 June), will take place on the A5127 Birmingham Road between the junctions of St John Street and Green Hill. 

In addition to resurfacing the full width of the carriageway, highways crews will replace ironwork and kerbing, repair drainage, and refresh the road markings. 

The work is expected to take around seven weeks and will be carried out under daytime temporary traffic management.  

Overnight road closures will be required so that crews can safely resurface the carriageway at minimal disruption to the public. A signposted diversion route will be in place. 

James Bailey, Staffordshire County Council’s Assistant Director for Highways and the Built County, said: “Birmingham Road runs through the heart of Lichfield and – as with any busy carriageway – the volume of traffic has taken its toll on the road’s surface. 

“This is why the county council is investing over a million pounds to resurface the road as the summer brings us better weather. The result will be smoother journeys for people travelling through the area and I hope people will be pleased with the finish. 

“The road works will inevitably cause delays but please be assured that our teams are doing all they can to assist the community and minimise disruption.” 

This week, Staffordshire County Council announced an £8 million plan to double down on tackling potholes and drainage issues over the next year. This follows a surge in reports of road defects after the county endured one of the wettest and stormiest winters on record.

This investment is in addition to the £53 million being spent on a range of major projects, vital road improvements and general road maintenance in 24/25.
