Refurbishment of an 18th century Grade II Listed road bridge in South Staffordshire has been completed.The scheme at Wodehouse Lane Bridge, A463, Gospel End, Wombourne, is the second and final phase following initial work last year.

It took just under seven weeks to complete, with final works finishing two days ahead of schedule. Staffordshire County Council invested £350,000 in the whole scheme.

Work on the masonry arch bridge will improve and protect the structure for future years. This phase included further strengthening, waterproofing, drainage improvements and resurfacing.

The bridge is an example of one of the many ageing structures in Staffordshire that need proper funding for ongoing preservation and maintenance. Staffordshire County Council’s Roadmap to a Better Network details the issue of ageing structures, and how the county council is calling for better funding from Government so these structures can be saved for the future.

Daniel Cecil, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Highways (Operations South), said:

“Wodehouse Lane Bridge is a historical asset to Staffordshire and so this refurbishment scheme had to be carried out in keeping with its Grade II Listed status. We’re pleased it’s now complete and the work has been slightly ahead of schedule.

“It’s been a comprehensive project and has taken place in two phases, strengthening and maintaining the bridge structure for generations to come. We’d again like to thank people for their understanding while work has been undertaken.”
