Nottingham City Council will soon embark on the fourth year of its popular Streets for People programme of neighbourhood improvements.

The project, which targets changes which make a real difference across the city, including fixing and resurfacing roads, footpaths, bins, improving traffic and safety issues, providing benches and improvements for trees, has been running since 2022 and has completed:

• 223 roads resurfaced or improved
• 86 footpaths resurfaced or improved
• 290 trees planted or rejuvenated

As part of the most recent Streets for People programme, which completes in August resurfacing works have been completed at locations including:

• Pelham Avenue, Berridge
• Linnell Street, St Anns
• Lord Nelson Street, Dales
• Morrell Bank, Bestwood
• Sellers Wood Drive/Coventry Road junction, Bulwell
• Wemyss Gardens, Lenton & Wollaton East

Thanks to £7million of funding via the East Midlands Combined County Authority and national government for 2026/28, this vital work to make getting around our neighbourhoods easier and safer will continue.

Coming up for through the second half of 2026, and up to March 2028, Streets for People funding 4 will allow the city’s teams to:

• Resurface or improve 84 roads, including but not limited to Greendale Road, Trent Lane (Dales), Lloyd Street (Sherwood), Burgass Road (Mapperley)
• Resurface or improve 12 footpaths
• Carry out tree improvements in 18 wards
• Implement eight cycle & walking improvements including new cycle crossing, junction improvements and benches
• Implement thirteen road safety schemes in 15 wards
• Implement ten traffic management schemes including parking restrictions

Councillor Patience Ifediora, Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: 

“It’s great to be able to continue our Streets for People programme – it’s so important that we put time and effort into improving our streets and creating safer and easier journeys for everyone but especially those walking or cycling.

“I’m proud that Streets for People uses a collaborative approach – with the roads that need attention put forward by local people and prioritised by your Councillors – and I encourage everyone to have their say when they notice issues in their local area so that we can continue to get on top of the areas in our city that need attention.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said:

“When I visit communities across Nottingham, I see how much local streets matter. Smoother roads, safer crossings, better footpaths and greener streets are not minor improvements, they help people get to work, take children to school, visit family and use local shops.

“That’s why we are delivering £7 million through the East Midlands Combined County Authority and national government, as part of a wider £13.67m investment over four years in Nottingham’s Streets for People programme. This will support visible improvements, from resurfacing roads and footpaths to safer walking and cycling routes. I know these changes will make a real difference for residents, creating safer streets, easier journeys and benefits people can see close to home.”
