A major contract to upgrade electronic signage across Scotland’s trunk road network has been awarded to SWARCCO UK & Ireland following a competitive tender process.
Up to £25m will be invested in improving and replacing Variable Message Signs (VMS) at locations around the country to ensure Traffic Scotland continues to provide drivers with high quality, real-time traffic and travel information.
John Pickworth, managing director of SWARCO UK & Ireland, commented:
“SWARCO is honoured to be selected by Transport Scotland for the new national electric signage upgrade contract. We extend our sincere thanks to Transport Scotland for placing its confidence in our technology, our people, and our long-standing commitment to safer, more efficient mobility.
This contract represents an important milestone for SWARCO. Scotland’s trunk-road network is a vital part of the country’s transport infrastructure, and we recognise the responsibility that comes with supporting its safe and reliable operation. We are proud to bring our expertise in intelligent signage, traffic management and digital traveller information to a programme of such national significance.
We look forward to working in close partnership with Transport Scotland to deliver modern, high-performance solutions that enhance road safety, keep travellers informed, and contribute to a resilient and future-ready transport network.
SWARCO remains committed to continuous innovation and to providing high-quality service throughout the lifetime of this contract. We are excited to begin this next chapter together.”
Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said:
“Roadside Variable Message Signs are an instantly recognisable part of Scotland’s trunk road network and play a vital role in helping drivers access the most up-to-date traffic and travel information.
“Signs will be upgraded or replaced at various locations around the country over the next five years. The motorway network in Glasgow is one area in particular where upgrading to more modern technology will improve Traffic Scotland’s ability to manage vehicles on this section of the network.
“This investment will ensure that roadside technology remains fit for purpose and continues to support the safe and efficient performance of the trunk road network.”
