Taming the killer kerb: Work set to begin on Salisbury ‘hubcap graveyard’ junction

Wiltshire Council will be carrying out remedial works to the so-called ‘killer kerb’ at the junction of South Western Road and Fisherton Street in Salisbury next week. The 35cm (13in) ‘trief’ kerb is designed to protect pedestrians by stopping vehicles mounting the pavement, but has been struck by multiple vehicles since it was installed.

Wiltshire Council is replacing the section that has been damaged by vehicles striking it despite an audit not raising any concerns about the use of the kerb. The kerb had been listed as a tourist attraction on Google Maps, has had several Facebook pages dedicated to it and is locally known as a “hubcap graveyard’.

The works follow a post completion safety audit of the Fisherton Gateway improvements, which primarily focused on enhancing pedestrian safety in the area. Works will include the reduction of the current gradient of the pedestrian footpath beneath the railway bridge which was identified in the audit as being too steep.

In addition, a bollard will be installed at the corner of the footpath and further deterrent paving to help aid drivers making the turn from South Western Road.

It is important to note that the safety audit did not raise any concerns regarding the positioning or use of the Trief kerb at this junction, nor did it identify any issues with vehicle movements in this area. However, a section of kerb that has been damaged by vehicles mounting the pavement will be replaced as part of the routine maintenance.
