Traffic Group Signals invests in the next generation with apprenticeship programme

Traffic Group Signals is proudly supporting the next generation of engineers by appointing an Apprentice Test Engineer to provide hands-on experience and mentorship to aspiring talent.

Daniel Kahal, 24, joined the company in September last year after deciding to pursue a career in traffic engineering. Having previously worked in the hospitality industry, Daniel saw the apprenticeship as the ideal opportunity to gain practical skills while learning on the job.

Since his appointment, Daniel has been immersed in a wide range of Traffic Group Signals projects to develop his technical skills. These projects range from factory acceptance tests and product development to pre-deployment checks for high-profile roadworks projects across the UK. This ongoing experience has allowed him to gain valuable insights and practical knowledge in a supportive environment.

The business is committed to investing in Daniel, ensuring a clear learning path and a close working relationship with experienced mentors, including Test Engineer Tom Robertson, who’s worked at Traffic Group Signals for over a decade. Daniel also attends college locally twice a week to study for qualifications in Electrical and Electronic Principles alongside Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

Commenting on his role, Daniel said:

“I’m incredibly proud to be part of the Traffic Group Signals team. Since joining in September, I’ve been involved in various aspects of the business. I learn best through hands-on experience, so when I found this opportunity, it felt like the perfect chance to gain practical skills while working on real, live projects. It’s a great feeling to know that I’m working towards some fantastic qualifications while being hands-on with live projects to support our customers.”

“Aside from developing my knowledge and skills, what I enjoy most is the support from the team. Having such a committed and experienced mentor in Tom, who is willing to share his knowledge and advice so openly, makes a huge difference. Every day brings something new, and I feel like I’m constantly growing personally and professionally – I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

Tom Robertson commented:

“We’re passionate about nurturing future talent. Daniel brings fresh energy and curiosity to the team, and we’re committed to providing the right support and guidance to help him thrive. Investing in the next generation is not just about passing on skills – it’s about building upon our company culture where knowledge is shared, and innovation is encouraged.”
