Turner & Townsend sustainable transport across the UK’s Northeast

Turner & Townsend has been appointed by Nexus, the Tyne and Wear passenger transport executive, as a supplier to its two latest frameworks for project management and cost and commercial management.

The frameworks, which will run for three years with the possibility to extend by one year, will support the delivery of the Nexus capital programme. This programme provides improved connectivity via a sustainable and reliable form of transport across the northeast.

Turner & Townsend will help support the delivery of schemes with its full project management and cost and commercial management services. This includes station refurbishments and track replacement, as part of the asset renewal programme.

Nexus manages major transport programmes across Tyne and Wear which include:

  • The Metro, a modernisation programme, providing a step change in comfort and reliability for their passengers.
  • Improving local bus services, working with local councils and operators through the bus strategy to meet the needs of local communities.
  • Investing in smart travel, with the Pop card for use on Metro and beyond to make buying a ticket simpler and more flexible.

Having worked on behalf of Nexus over the past 14 years, this appointment also builds upon the company’s extensive expertise on other transport network systems across the UK, including Network Rail’s Programme & Project Management Services framework for the Northwest & Central Region and Edinburgh Trams to Newhaven.

Clare Wood, Regional Lead and Infrastructure Director, commented: “We are delighted to announce that we have been successful with the Nexus frameworks for project management and cost and commercial management in Tyne and Wear.

“Our local team take great pride in our connection to Nexus and our vested interest in the transformation of the North-East region. This deep-rooted commitment drives our team’s passion to deliver an impactful service to build infrastructure which allows people to better connect, smooth the wheels of business and let the streets breathe.”

Sarah McManus, Head of Renewals at Nexus, said  “We are delighted to have Turner & Townsend on board to provide project management and quantity surveying services for three years.

“Turner & Townsend is in an excellent position to support Nexus with renewal projects across the Tyne and Wear Metro through our asset renewal programme. This continues to be a successful and fruitful partnership for us.”
