Core Highways, Solar Gates UK, Balfour Beatty, and HRS are hosting a series of transformative events under the Thrive From Crime initiative, focused on giving ex-offenders a fresh start. These events highlight how hiring individuals with convictions can provide businesses with loyal, skilled employees while offering those individuals a real chance to rebuild their lives. 

Christina Scant, Group Head of HR at Core Highways, who led the development of the Core Highways ROTL* programme, emphasised the life-changing impact that recruiting from prisons can have: “This scheme gives ex-offenders an opportunity to rebuild their lives ready for release. There can be many reasons why someone might be in their situation, and our national coverage means that on release, they can continue employment with us in a new area if that’s their wish or they can access housing and other support as they’re in full-time employment and have built some funds to start their life. 

Core Highways have been approved as a ROTL employer and completed their first Lantra training with three inmates at Kirklevington Grange prison in March 2024. ROTL stands for Release on Temporary Licence and allows the employee to leave prison for a short time to undertake paid employment and they are keen to share their experiences with other employers in the sector. 

With the 2021 Prisons Strategy White Paper calling for initiatives to cut crime by reducing reoffending, these events offer businesses the chance to be part of the solution. From hearing powerful lived experiences to learning the practical steps for getting involved, attendees will gain valuable insights into how second chances can transform lives.
