Farmers have been issued a warning by West Mercia Police over mud on the roads. Officers have warned that the recent rain and arrival of autumn mean more mud and debris may be being brought onto rural roads by tractors and other farm or contractor vehicles.
West Mercia Police’s Road Safety Team told the Hereford Times that farmers and contractors must ensure that their vehicles are cleared of mud and debris before entering the public highway.
“Excess mud can be extremely dangerous – it affects how vehicles handle, increases the risk of skidding, and poses particular hazards for motorcyclists and cyclists,” a spokesperson said. “Any incidents of mud on the road causing an issue can be reported to the relevant local highways authority or if this poses an immediate danger call 101.”
The spokesperson said drivers who encounter mud on the road should reduce their speed and keep a larger distance between them and the vehicle in front.
