People living in Bournemouth are being invited to have their say on proposals to make local roads safer for walking, wheeling and cycling.

BCP (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole) Council is consulting on plans to extend a key active travel route that already runs through Bournemouth Gardens, linking the Square with Coy Pond Gardens, where recent improvements have included a new crossing on Branksome Wood Road, says BournemouthOne.

Funding from Active Travel England would allow the route to be extended, offering an alternative to driving into town from Branksome and Parkstone and improving access to schools in the area.

As part of the proposals, the council is suggesting a quiet route along Yarmouth Road, where traffic levels and noise can make walking or cycling feel unsafe. Further improvements are also being considered for Sheringham Road, part of Yarmouth Road, and Bourne Valley Road to strengthen links into Coy Pond Road and the gardens.

Later in 2026, a new crossing is planned for Alder Road, connecting Recreation Road with Sheringham Road, alongside a second crossing on Yarmouth Road.

The consultation runs until 2 March and feedback can be shared through the council’s consultation webpage.
