Glasgow: 16 speed cameras to be switched off

Sixteen speed cameras in and around Glasgow are to be turned off in the coming weeks, Police Scotland has said. The force said the locations, which include three in Glasgow, will see speed cameras effectively switched off for a period of up to three years, reports The Scotsman.

The changes come after a recent review which identified several sites for “dormancy” – which may be recommended if a camera has fulfilled traffic safety aims or has been unsuccessful in reducing speeds or road accidents.

Police Scotland said the decisions were “evidence-based” and “data driven” but said it understood that some of the changes could worry residents.

It has reassured communities that speed and accidents will continue to be monitored and cameras will be reinstated if there is a significant increase in incidents.

A spokesperson said all signage will remain in place despite enforcement ceasing, with a bag placed over fixed cameras to show it is not operating.

Mobile speed cameras are set to be switched off immediately, while fixed cameras will stop operating over the coming weeks.
