BSI has published a new report, Decarbonizing Transport for a Net Zero Future: Accelerating the Pace, Influencing the Direction, that explores what is needed to enable the sector to transition in key areas.
The whitepaper suggests that whilst transport is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise, requiring a whole-system transformation and need to consider ‘life-cycle’ emissions from transport, that clear progress is being made and that standardisation has a critical role to play now and in the future.
Whole systems encompass everything from new fuels and power systems, a change in vehicle production techniques, investment in infrastructure, addressing skills and training gaps, behavioural shifts, and strong policy coordination. The report also notes that because each mode of transport brings distinct challenges and opportunities, solutions must be tailored and coordinated in a way that ensures the whole system moves forward together.
The report sets out six key priorities for the decarbonization of road transport, outlining how standards can help:
• Expand and standardise EV charging infrastructure
• Advance circularity in battery production and reuse
• Remove existing barriers to the scale up of zero emission road freight
• Embed accessibility across the transport system
• Establish clear legislation and infrastructure for micromobility
• Foster data sharing and interoperability for multimodal systems.
Crucially, the report highlights the role of standards in addressing these challenges. Standards are not abstract frameworks, they are practical tools developed collaboratively with industry, government, academia and the research community to reduce risk, build investor confidence and accelerate deployment at scale.
