Dualling work set to begin on A66

Dualling work on the A66 between Penrith and Scotch Corner will go ahead under Government plans. The scheme will complete the transformation of the route between the M6 at Penrith and the A1(M) at Scotch Corner into a full dual carriageway, says the News & Star.

Officials say the improved route will boost capacity, cut journey times, and create a more reliable link across the North.

The Department for Transport said:

“The A66 is one of the largest and most important road investments in the North of England. The route plays an essential role in connecting people and places across the north of England, and for journeys between Scotland and the eastern side of England; it is critical for freight and links to international ports.

“Investment in dualling the remaining single carriageway sections between the M6 and A1(M) will significantly improve journey times and safety, as well as providing additional resilience to trans-Pennine journeys which currently rely on the M62 corridor.”

The upgraded A66 is expected to reduce journeys by up to 12 minutes.

HGVs account for 25 per cent of traffic on the route – more than twice the national average and the route is seen as a key connector for domestic and international trade, including access to ports such as Stranraer and links to Northern Ireland.
