Suffolk: Local praise for Felixstowe and Haverhill roadworks plan

A new plan to move cars that block roadworks is ending delays to desperately needed resurfacing projects in Suffolk, and having the added effect of eradicating parking problems for locals.

The “lift and shift” trial was launched because resurfacing schemes were cancelled or partially finished because parked vehicles stopped workers’ access, says the Ipswich Star. Since March, Suffolk County Council’s highways team has been either moving vehicles to a safe place in line of sight or to a secure compound in Bury St Edmunds after having repeated issues with road blocking.

Homeowners in Victoria Street in Felixstowe said there had been problems with parking and welcomed the resurfacing, which included the provision of clearer yellow lines, hoping these would act as a deterrent to motorists. Vehicles removed as part of the trial are subject to a £70 Fixed Penalty Charge, while the owners of vehicles taken to the compound face additional recovery fees.

The council spokesman said: “Residents complying with the parking restrictions required for the resurfacing shows the ‘lift and shift’ trial has been acting as an effective deterrent, especially when some of these sites were previously prevented from being resurfaced due to parked vehicles.

“We have ensured residents are made aware of the restrictions and enforcement measures well in advance via letters, vehicle flyers and signage on site. Residents have also been encouraged to contact us if they have a blue badge or accessibility issues so that special dispensation can be given for their vehicles.”
