Suffolk Highways is to conduct works along Holywell’s Road, Toller Road, Cliff Road, and Ship Launch Road to get the network ready to support the landmark new Prince Philip Lock Bridge river crossing.
A major programme of road improvements will get underway in Ipswich this summer as part of efforts to help regeneration of the Waterfront and in preparation for the new Prince Philip Lock Bridge.Suffolk Highways will be conducting essential works along Holywell’s Road, Toller Road, Cliff Road, and Ship Launch Road to ensure the surrounding network is ready to support a landmark new river crossing.
The improvements include pavement widening, new drainage, upgraded street lighting and resurfacing to help make the area safer and better connected for residents, businesses and visitors.
Works are scheduled to take place between Sunday 21 June and Monday 21 September, with a series of overnight road closures planned to reduce daytime disruption.
In addition, a one-way traffic system will be introduced on Toller Road and Cliff Road (from the junction of Toller Road to the junction of Patteson Road) for the duration of the works. Temporary traffic lights and signed diversion routes will also be introduced at different stages of the works to keep traffic moving and maintain safety.
The works are a key step in delivering the wider Prince Philip Lock Bridge project, which will provide a new crossing over the River Orwell and strengthen links between the town centre and the waterfront.
Councillor Christopher Hudson, Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said:
“These improvements are an important part of getting Ipswich ready for the Prince Philip Lock Bridge, which will transform connections across the town.
“We do appreciate roadworks can be disruptive, but by carrying out much of this work overnight and carefully phasing closures, we are working to keep that disruption to a minimum.
“Once complete, these upgrades will deliver safer roads, better journeys and support future growth for Ipswich.”
