A £63 million upgrade has been approved by Suffolk County Council for a key stretch of the A12 that will provide a welcome boost transport links and road safety.
The Council unanimously approved the plans yesterday (October 20), which will see major improvements between the A12/A14 Seven Hills junction and Woods Lane, north of Woodbridge. The project aims to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and improve safety for all road users, including motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and public transport passengers, reports the East Anglian Daily Times.
Christopher Hudson, cabinet member for transport and highways at Suffolk County Council, said: “This scheme will provide significant infrastructure improvements and is an investment in our county.
“It will improve the resilience of the local road network as congestion is already a problem, especially at peak periods, and will also improve connectivity to the regions’ ports and support the visitor economy.”
As part of the improvements the Martlesham footbridge will be replaced with a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, and a new bus link junction will be built north of Anson Road.
Additional features include maintenance bays, updated traffic signals, and improved pedestrian crossings.
The plans were developed following two rounds of public consultation since the scheme was first proposed in 2020.
