Residents have called for action on abandoned roadwork signs across Leicestershire, prompting an extra countywide clean-up this November.

A dedicated team will take to the roads this autumn and travel around the county to collect signs, cones or equipment left behind following roadworks.

Councillor Andrew Hamilton-Gray (pictured), Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

“A lot of different organisations carry out work on Leicestershire’s roads, from utility companies and developers to council maintenance teams. That can sometimes mean signs and cones are left behind longer than they should be.

“Residents have told us they want to see this tackled, which is why this clean-up is taking place. ‘Project: De-cone-gestion’ is all about removing unwanted signs and cones and helping to keep roadsides looking neat, safe and well cared for.”

With more than 2,700 miles of roads across Leicestershire, identifying abandoned equipment can be challenging, making reports from residents an invaluable part of keeping the network safe and tidy.

“Reports from local residents and local councillors help us to identify problem locations and ensure action is taken where it’s needed most,” he added.
