Around £15 million of external funding could be spent on transport, Active Travel and road improvement schemes across Bury under plans due to go before councillors.

A report to Bury Council’s cabinet on 4 November seeks approval to begin procurement for seven major projects funded through Greater Manchester and government transport programmes, says the Bury Times.

The schemes are fully funded through external grants, meaning there would be no direct financial contribution required from the council.

The programme includes Bury Town Centre Streets for All (Phase 1), Radcliffe Town Centre Streets for All (Phase 1), Ramsbottom Town Centre Streets for All (Phase 1), the Radcliffe Metrolink Active Access Ramp Scheme, Parkhills Junction Improvements, the Hinds Lane and Elton Bridge Development scheme, and Hollins Brow Bus Pinch Point Improvements.

According to the report, the programme represents approximately £15m of investment into the borough.

The largest projects focus on improving walking, wheeling and cycling links around Bury, Radcliffe and Ramsbottom town centres through upgraded crossings, quieter streets and improved active travel routes.

Meanwhile, the Hinds Lane and Elton Bridge scheme would replace an existing one-metre-wide bridge over the River Irwell with a new 3.5-metre-wide shared-use accessible bridge.

The project would also include widening footpaths, improved drainage and lighting upgrades along Hinds Lane and connections to the canal towpath.
