Improvement works at Tollgate in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk have been completed ahead of schedule.

Major construction finished today on the former gyratory layout, which has been reconfigured into a conventional signal‑controlled junction, allowing two‑way traffic movements in all directions.

The completed works include reconstruction of the outer junction, with enhanced carriageway layouts, upgraded drainage, new traffic signals, and improved street lighting.

A key focus of the scheme, which was originally scheduled to finish in the summer, has been improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme forms part of Suffolk County Council’s Active Travel Programme, which aims to make it safer, easier, and more enjoyable for people to walk, wheel and cycle in the county, while continuing to support vehicular movement through the junction.

New, wider shared‑use footways have been delivered around the junction, alongside Dutch‑style pedestrian, and cycle crossings at key locations, including links to the Tollgate Public House, Bell Meadow, and the service road to the south.

John Clements, Assistant Director for Suffolk Highways, said: 

“We are pleased to have completed the Tollgate Gyratory scheme ahead of schedule, which is a testament to those working on the project.

“Finishing earlier than anticipated has allowed us to reopen key routes sooner, helping to reduce disruption for people travelling through the area.

“This Active Travel scheme has delivered safer, more accessible facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling, alongside a junction layout that supports everyday journeys.

“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in successfully delivering the scheme, as well as residents, businesses and highway users for their patience while these essential improvement works were carried out.”
