Cumberland Council is continuing work on Active Travel improvements on Central Way, Workington, aimed at creating safer, more accessible journeys for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme is being delivered by the council’s in-house highways operations team. The works include carriageway and drainage repairs, upgrades to street lighting, improvements to cycling infrastructure, refreshed road markings and the installation of a new raised table crossing to improve safety for people walking and cycling.
These improvements form part of Cumberland Council’s wider commitment to improving road safety, encouraging active travel and investing in the local transport network.
To enable the works to be completed safely and efficiently, two-way temporary traffic lights will remain in place during working hours of 7.30am to 4.00pm until 30 October.
The final stage of the project will involve carriageway resurfacing works by the council’s contractor, DSD Construction Ltd, taking place over up to six nights from Monday 2 November, subject to weather conditions.
Once complete, the improvements will deliver safer and more attractive routes for all road users while supporting sustainable travel in Workington.
