The Essex town of Aveley is preparing itself to be impacted by a huge water mains refurbishment project. Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) that will see a series of road closures take place until May 2027.
ESW says that the Aveley water pipe replacement project is a major investment to strengthen the resilience and performance of the local water network. Around 5km of ageing water pipes will be replaced with modern plastic pipes with new valves, to improve water quality, reduce leakage and lower the risk of bursts, reports Essex Live.
By renewing the water pipes, ESW will improve the reliability of the water supply and provide a long-term solution to the burst mains and leaks locals have been experiencing.
They will be carried out in phases, with different road closures taking place. From Monday, June 1 to early September 2026, work will be carried out on Romford Road, Nethan Drive and Tamar Drive.
From early September to late December 2026, work will be carried out on Shannon Way, Shannon Way Side Road, Usk Road and Ravel Gardens. Then, from early January to late April 2027, work will be carried out on Ravel Road, Severn Road, Nare Road, Perry Way, Monnow Road, Tyne Gardens, Nethan Drive Side Road, Swale Close, Tamar Drive and Side Road.
ESW says:
“There will be traffic management in place and limited periodic road closures when required in line with the project. You will be informed when your road is going to be affected. We aim to provide you with two weeks’ notice of when we are coming to your road.
“Access to your property will always be maintained. Our core working hours are 8am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Some weekend work may be needed at certain stages of the project, particularly for reinstatement.”
