Gallows Corner in Romford could remain partially closed until the end of September, a new traffic order has revealed. The order – which came into force on 30 June and will remain in place until 30 September – allows for water main installation and carriageway resurfacing, says the Romford Recorder.

It covers key routes up to the Gallows Corner junction which remain shut, including parts of the A12, A127 and the eastbound carriageway of the new flyover. The order, made by Transport for London (TfL), permits closures as works progress, but does not confirm whether all may be implemented.

Closures can be put in place at any time until the order expires or until works have been completed, whichever is sooner.

The order also bans pedestrians on certain footpaths around the junction, such as along Eastern Avenue East (A12) and on Southend Arterial Road (A127), adjacent to Gallows Corner Retail Park.

Drone images showed large pits and visible pipes at different points around the roundabout, where Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) is undertaking the works.

Gallows Corner has seen continued disruption since its full closure last year for flyover and water works, with a partial reopening on May 10 allowing traffic on Straight Road, Main Road, and the westbound carriageway of the flyover.

TfL has not confirmed a date for the full reopening of the junction, despite speculation of works continuing until mid-October.

In a previous statement, Scott Haxton, TfL director of capital delivery, said:

“We know how frustrating this situation continues to be for local residents, businesses and road users, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience while we have been working with ESW to safely progress this work.

“We remain focused on fully reopening the road network at Gallows Corner, and supporting ESW to complete final testing and commissioning works as quickly and safely as possible, while protecting vital water supplies.”
