Junction work on the A34 in Oxfordshire is about to move into its next phase of construction following months of road closures and temporary traffic lights.
Work at the Lodge Hill Interchange near Abingdon is expected to progress to stage four in the coming weeks, with final completion planned for later this year, reports the Oxford Mail. This stage includes realigning the A34 northbound slip road and work on the southern section of the south roundabout and widening the southbound slip road.
It will also include a new access road called Egerton Road which will tie into the roundabout and A34 southbound and northbound narrow lanes.
Temporary traffic signals will be in place at certain points during the works.
The Lodge Hill Interchange scheme is funded primarily through more than £17 million from Homes England’s Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land fund, with further contributions from developer funding and the Housing Growth Deal.
In July last year, it emerged that the total budget had risen to £36.09 million to address rising costs.
The scheme will add south-facing slip roads to the existing north-facing junction, aiming to ease congestion in Abingdon town centre by providing direct access to the A34 southbound. Existing cyclists and pedestrian routes will also be upgraded to improve safety and connectivity in the area.
The northbound on-slip to the A34 has been closed for about four weeks to tie the existing slip road into the new north roundabout.
A similar closure of the southbound off-slip is planned for this month, with further details to be announced.
