Californian city bans new petrol stations

A city in the San Francisco Bay Area of California has become what’s believed to be the first to ban any new petrol pumps being installed within its boundaries.

The website electrek.co reports that Petaluma’s council voted unanimously to say no new petrol stations can be built and existing ones can’t add any new pumps, but they can add electric chargers.

Councilor D’Lynda Fischer, who introduced the measure, is quoted as saying, “The goal here is to move away from fossil fuels, and to make it as easy as possible to do that. Right now, we have existing fossil fuel stations, and what we want them to do is add [electric vehicle] chargers and create another source of fuelling people can use.”
