A coroner is considering referring Highways England for possible corporate manslaughter charges over the death of a woman on a smart motorway.
62 year old Nargis Begum from Sheffield had broken down on a stretch of the M1 near Woodhall Services in September 2018 and was killed when another car crashed into hers while she waited nearby.
Coroner Nicola Mundy said Highways England may have to answer manslaughter charges in connection with her death. Highways England has until 11 February to give its response.
If the case were to be referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be the first time this has happened.
