Highways managers in the city of Southend in Essex is reporting measurable improvements at a key junction in the city after the installation of MOVA technology at a set of traffic signals.
The technology, which means traffic signals communicate with each other so flows are managed in response to demand as opposed to being based on timers alone, has been installed at the busy Kent Elms junction on the A127 just north of the city centre, along with the Tesco/Bell and Cuckoo Corner junctions.
A spokesman told Highways News they have recorded measurable improvements in journey times, now averaging 14%.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that other junctions on the A127 corridor have better traffic flows, that maybe because of the MOVA installation. This is before planned installation of the signal technology at the nearby Progress Road junction, and other nearby intersections taking place early in the new financial year.
The A127 is one of two key routes from London into the city, along with the A13 which runs further south, closer to the Thames Estuary.
