Work is underway in East Sussex on a major project to replace a vital bridge. Exceat Bridge carries the A259 over the River Cuckmere between Seaford and Eastbourne, within the Seven Sisters Country Park and the South Downs National Park.

The Argus reports that the bridge links coastal communities across East Sussex. In an update, East Sussex Highways said that piling installation was underway on the west side of the river and set to continue until the end of August.

East Sussex Highways warned that piling works, which involve driving columns into the ground to support the new bridge’s foundations, could cause some disruption “as heavy machinery and materials are transported onto the site under specific road movement orders”.

Exceat Bridge is currently a single-lane bridge, creating a longstanding bottleneck on the A259.

East Sussex Highways said it had held its monthly stakeholder meeting on 22 July “to provide project updates, talk through milestones, and explain technical and logistics concerns, so that people have a better understanding of the works”.
