Greater London Authority criticised for ULEZ advert’s claims

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a claim against the accuracy of a radio advert promoting London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone.

The advert, run around the time of ULEZ expansion last autumn, claimed “According to research, one of the most polluted places in London is inside your car.”

Complainants challenged this assertion and the the ASA found when assessing the three reports of experiments on the levels of air pollution that car users faced, none of the studies was based in London. The first was based in Leicester, the second was based in Asan and Chunan, South Korea, and the third in Los Angeles.

There were also issues with claims around NO2.

The ASA has ordered the Greater London Authority to ensure that relevant evidence was held in support of all objective marketing claims.
