Heidi Alexander has been appointed the new transport secretary after Louise Haigh resigned.
The Swindon South MP who was a justice minister until her promotion today, and previously worked as Sadiq Khan’s deputy transport mayor between 2018 and 2021.
Ms Haigh resigned after it was revealed she pleaded guilty to an offence related to incorrectly telling police that a work mobile phone was stolen in 2013.
Ms Alexander has had a long career in politics, starting off as a councillor before serving as the MP for Lewisham East between 2010-2018.
She also served as the shadow health secretary under Jeremy Corbyn between 2015-2016, during the junior doctors’ contract strikes.
She was elected to represent Swindon South at the July general election, and was quickly offered a position as a minister in the justice department.
