Highways England launches consultation on A417 ‘missing link’ road

Highways England has launched a consultation on the new A417 ‘missing link’ road in Gloucestershire .

HE has published a video fly-over of part of the proposed 3.5-mile route, south of Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The aim of the project is to solve one of the worst bottlenecks in the South West and improve travel links between the M5 in Gloucestershire and the M4 in Wiltshire.

Plans are for dual-carriageway heading north-west from Swindon, and past Cirencester, to become a single-lane at the Cowley roundabout, through Nettleton Bottom, past Birdlip and to that hairpin bend near the Air Balloon pub.

Heading east from Gloucester, the dual carriageway from the Brockworth Bypass and round the Air Balloon roundabout then becomes single lane heading south east through Birdlip to the Cowley roundabout. The road goes over a bat underpass, with a road sign showing where to pull off for the A436 and Stow and the A40 for Oxford, and Birdlip on the A4070.
