The Highways Sector Council (HSC) today unveils the second phase of its ‘Ways of Life’ campaign – a cross-industry initiative designed to spotlight the diverse job opportunities within the highways sector and inspire the next generation to see it as a place to build careers of purpose, skill, and impact.
Launched in partnership with the Department for Transport, National Highways and the private sector at Highways UK in Birmingham, this marks a major step forward in the industry’s collective effort to attract and nurture future talent.
Following the success of last year’s campaign launch, which introduced a compelling film showcasing the essential role the highways sector plays in our everyday lives, phase two shifts the focus onto the people who make it happen – the individuals whose dedication and expertise keep the UK’s highways safe, reliable, and connected.
The new series of “Day in the Life” stories offers audiences a behind-the-scenes look at a typical working day for a variety of professionals – from engineers and environmental specialists to planners, communicators, and technicians. Each short film captures the people behind the highways network, showcasing their roles, motivations, and the real-world impact of their career including maintaining road safety, coordinating projects on-site, and ensuring communities stay connected through better planning and communication.
Simon Lightwood, Minister for Roads and Buses, said:
“Our road network is made possible by a talented workforce, who are the foundation for delivering better and safer roads. Roads connect businesses and communities, all while helping to deliver our Plan for Change mission to grow the economy.
“The future of our roads depends on a new generation to drive this work forward, and with the ‘Ways of Life’ campaign, we’re investing in them and keeping Britain’s roads safe, reliable, and world leading.”
Leon Daniels, Chair of the Highways Sector Council said:
“Those of us who work in the highways sector know how important roads (the footways we walk on as well as the carriageways we drive and cycle on) are to the country, and, and what a huge and fulfilling range of careers the sector has to offer. But it seems this is something of an open secret, so a key part of our mission at the Highways Sector Council is to spread the word – promoting a positive image of the sector and the roles it relies on, so that we can continue to attract and retain the talented people we need. Our hope is that the bite-size videos we are launching today will convey a clearer picture of the many different roles involved in highways — often behind the scenes, but always vital to keeping our country on the move.”
Andy Graham, Chair of the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund Trustees, said:
“William Rees Jeffreys recognised that investing in the skills and knowledge of those designing, managing, and maintaining highways was fundamental to achieving his ambition for roads that better serve our needs. From motorways to country lanes, and high streets to housing estates, we rely on a multitude of professionals to deliver roads that work for us all. Seventy-five years after the establishment of his charitable fund, the Rees Jeffreys trustees are delighted to be helping to fund this important initiative, which complements our other work to offer financial support to those in the sector looking to improve their professional capability, wherever they are on their career journey.”
