There will be a long-term plan for both local and the national road networks, according to Lillian Greenwood, Minister for the Future of Roads.
Addressing visitors to Highways UK, on day one, Ms Greenwood said that it was vital that the development and improvement of the strategic road network remained a priority for government and there would be a long-term plan for the continuation of that.
She said although detail would emerge in the Spring after the Budget this month and the Spending Review, a multi-year strategy for roads would continue. Ms Greenwood also said she would continue investment in local roads. She told delegates: “We are determined to improve the state of our roads and we will not budge in our commitment to providing funding for local roads.” She reaffirmed the commitment to fix one million potholes with extra funding and cited the recent launch of the a new standard for highway condition data collection.
She also called for the continued search for greener methods to build and maintain the road network.
Ms Greenwood also hinted at the launch of a new national road safety strategy-the first in a decade.
