Safety concerns about a motorway junction in Surrey have been raised by an MP after changes to its layout.
Surrey Heath MP Al Pinkerton has written to Surrey County Council about the M3/A322 junction near Bagshot, stating that residents had reported unclear signage, dangerous lane changes, ongoing congestion and poor traffic flow, says the BBC.
A survey of 431 road users found that more than three quarters had experienced safety or operational problems since changes were introduced, he said.
National Highways said the concerns were a matter for Surrey County Council. The council said it was reviewing the letter and would respond.
In his letter to Councillor Matt Furniss, cabinet member for highways, transport and economic growth, Pinkerton said that drivers had described “abrupt lane changes, dangerous weaving movements, sudden braking and near misses caused by drivers realising too late they are in the incorrect lane”.
He added: “Many respondents described the junction as stressful and unpredictable during peak periods, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the revised layout who are forced into last-minute manoeuvres.”
The MP has called for a full safety review, clearer signage and changes to traffic light sequencing to improve flow and reduce risks and said that the strength and consistency of feedback showed the matter required urgent attention.
Improvements to the junction took place last year after public concern led to talks with developers, councillors and MPs.
