Smoother journeys around the Barton-upon-Humber area are a step closer as construction begins on the town’s new link road that will connect Barrow Road, the A1077 and Caistor Road, helping to reduce pressure on existing routes, improve traffic flow and cut the number of HGVs travelling through the town centre.

It will also create better walking and cycling connections between homes, schools, employment areas and shops, giving people more choice in how they travel around Barton.

The link road is a key part of North Lincolnshire Council’s £19.7 million programme of investment in Barton-upon-Humber, alongside wider improvements to transport, active travel and the local environment.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“This investment will make a practical difference to residents’ everyday lives, with safer roads, fewer lorries travelling through the town and easier connections to homes, schools, shops and jobs.

“We said we would invest in Barton’s future and improve the way people move around the town. Work beginning on site shows we are delivering on that promise.

“This is about creating a better-connected Barton, reducing congestion, improving journey reliability and providing safer, more attractive routes for people to get about town – and we’re working on proposals to restrict HGV movements aligned with the creation of the new road.

“Residents are going to see these long-planned improvements becoming a reality.”

Cllr Paul Vickers, Barton ward member, said:

“This is about much more than building a road. It is about creating a transport network that is fit for the future, improving connections between neighbourhoods, schools, businesses and community facilities.

“Taking traffic away from existing routes and making walking and cycling easier will help create a cleaner, greener and better-connected Barton, while supporting the town’s future growth.”
