A major programme of improvements to roads, junctions, crossings and paths is set to get underway across Barton-upon-Humber in North Lincolnshire. Over the coming months, residents will see work taking place across the town to make everyday journeys easier and safer.
The work will include:
- Safer routes for children travelling to school and leisure activities
- Better walking and cycling connections
- Easier access to Barton railway station
- Improvements to roads, junctions and crossings
- Better links between the town centre, Waters’ Edge, Far Ings and the Humber Bridge area.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Barton residents have waited a long time for some of these improvements and they are now going to see them being delivered.
“The bypass has started, roads and junctions are being improved and we’re putting in safer routes so children can get to school and families can move around Barton more easily. We’ve worked hard to secure the investment needed and now the focus is on getting it delivered.
“There will inevitably be some inconvenience while this amount of work is taking place. Roads will be busy and there will be some minor delays at different points over the coming months, but we will work with the contractor to keep disruption down.
“At the end of it, Barton will be better connected, easier to get around and better prepared for the future.”
Work will start next month at Whitecross Street and on Tofts Road, with the full programme including improvements along Barrow Road,, High Street, Hungate, Chapel Lane, Waterside Road and Castledyke West, around Forkedale Roundabout and on routes serving Baysgarth School, Barton railway station and residential areas.
Martin Vickers, MP for Brigg and Immingham, said: “Keeping people safe has to be the priority, particularly children travelling to school, families with pushchairs and people walking into the town centre.
“Barton has a strong local economy and that success brings more traffic, including HGV movements connected with major employers that support hundreds of jobs locally. These improvements will help us manage that traffic while creating a safer environment for people moving around the town.
“There will inevitably be some inconvenience while the work is taking place but in the longer term they will make a real difference to Barton and the residents who live, work and visit here.”
North Lincolnshire Council has appointed Esh Construction following a competitive procurement process to carry out the programme.
