North Somerset: A greener commute on the Pier to Pier Way

An initiative to promote the Pier to Pier Way as a valuable commuting option is underway thanks to a partnership between North Somerset Council and Sustrans, the charity dedicated to making it easier for everyone to walk, wheel, and cycle.

This increasingly popular active travel route links Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare, offering a healthier, quicker, and more sustainable alternative to driving.

The initiative is focusing on employers situated along or near the route, encouraging them to help their workforce take advantage of the Pier to Pier Way. The route cuts four miles off the equivalent road journey, making cycling a green and time-efficient alternative. It can often be the most time-efficient door-to-door option.

To support local businesses and their employees in making the switch to cycling, a package of resources is being offered on a first come first served basis, including:

  • Expert advice for employers on promoting cycling in the workplace, including guidance on cycle parking, changing facilities, and the Government’s Cycle to Work Scheme
  • A limited supply of cycle racks available for interested employers
  • Cycle training and accompanied rides for staff who are less confident on a bike
  • A ‘Borrow a Bike’ scheme, offering temporary access to bikes for those wanting to try commuting by cycling
  • ‘Dr Bike’ sessions, providing free safety checks and basic maintenance
  • Cycle maps and personalised route planning advice.
