Motorists have been warned against using a cycle and pedestrian path in Dumfriesshire as a shortcut around roadworks, after concerns were raised over the safety of children, cyclists and other vulnerable users.

The Kier, Penpont and Tynron Development Trust (KPTDT) has issued a reminder that motor vehicles are prohibited from using the route, which runs alongside the A702 between Penpont and Thornhill.

The warning comes as a section of the A702 at Penpont is closed for essential road reconstruction and drainage improvements, with a signed diversion in place via the B729 and A76. While acknowledging the disruption caused by the works, the trust said a “small minority” of drivers had been attempting to bypass the diversion by using the active travel route.

In a social media statement, KPTDT said: “We know the ongoing roadworks and detour on the A702 at Penpont are a major headache and adding time to your journeys.

“However, we are seeing motor vehicles attempting to use the Active Travel Path as a shortcut to bypass the diversion.”

The trust stressed that the path was designed exclusively for walking, cycling and wheeling, including use by wheelchair users, mobility scooter users and people with prams.

It added that all motorised vehicles were prohibited, with exceptions only for emergency services attending incidents and authorised maintenance vehicles.

The trust warned that drivers using the path were putting vulnerable pedestrians, children and cyclists at serious risk.

Opened in March 2024, the £2.3 million route provides a traffic-free link of approximately 2.5 miles between Penpont and Thornhill.

The path is separated from the adjacent road by a combination of grass verge, fencing and hedges, although a small entrance provides access from the road.

The trust’s warning highlights the importance of keeping dedicated active travel infrastructure safe and accessible, particularly when temporary road closures and diversion routes are in place.
