The South Korean traffic solutions start-up Nota AI, which specialises in using Artificial Intelligence to better manage road intersections, has been recognised for the second year in a row for its cutting edge road safety solution.
Nota AI uses AI technology to analyse traffic monitoring CCTV images to detect the movement of vehicles in real time. It then works out when accidents could occur up to three seconds before they happen through the short-term trajectory prediction. It then can warn people of hazardous situations using LED lights and speakers.
The AI Safe Crossing solution prevents pedestrian accidents due to turning cars, jaywalking or drivers whose sight lines may be impaired. It has been implemented as part of an AI technology demonstration testbed project supported by Gyeonggi-do Business and Science Accelerator. Carried out from September 2021 to December 2022, the first year focused on three major crossroads in the city of Pangyo, just south of the capital Seoul, while the second year on maintenance and the construction of an AI safe crossing in front of the nearby NCSoft R&D centre.
The implementation was the first to demonstrate Nota AI’s Safe Crossing technology anywhere in the world. It not only was subject to a detailed evaluation and helped form close relationships with researchers in the country but also provided experience and technical expertise and helped overcome real-world challenges regarding CCTV footage and on-road implementation, and technical V2X and signage expertise.
Nota AI is expanding its solution into the UK through a UK Testbed Initiative in Milton Keynes, working with the Korean International Trade Association as part of the city’s ambitions to build on its “world leading smart city reputation” to find innovative and sustainable solutions to make it even easier to get around.
Nota explains, “Nota AI Safe Crossing can effectively prevent accidents since it provides selective information for hazardous situations, enhancing the system’s reliability before human perception-reaction time (PRT). We expect AI Safe Crossing can prevent accident scenarios such as signal violations, poor visibility due to surrounding obstacles, and even dilemma situations for right-turning vehicles. This system is expected to play an important role in C-ITS intersection’s safety system by expressing less than 1-second short-term information on the LDM (Local Dynamic Map) by processing video data in real-time with Edge AI without V2X I2X communications.”
