Scots workplace parking levy approved

The Scottish Government has passed a law to allow councils to charge workplaces that offer parking.

The Conservatives and Labour in the Scottish Parliament opposed the idea, which means that workers could end up paying to park at work.

Opponents had said it wasn’t the time to impose a charge, given companies are trying to recover from two years of Covid restrictions, but the SNP denied it was a tax on workers.

Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth said that although councils will be allowed to charge from 1 March, it may take years for schemes to be introduced.

Insider.co.uk reports she did, though, admit that there had been no modelling done to understand the impacts of the scheme, mostly using evidence from Nottingham where such a scheme has been introduced.
