Another stride forward was taken today as Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet gave the green light to advance the next phase of development of the Shrub Hill Quarter in Worcester.
At a meeting last week, the County’s Cabinet gave the go ahead to enter into a funding agreement with Worcester City Council to deliver the Towns Fund Shrub Hill projects and obtaining tenders and issuing contracts for their construction.
The works include improvements to public space from Shrub Hill Road to Pheasant Street, including a new shared use link providing a connection between the Shrub Hill Railway Station to the city centre through St Martins Quarter, and the refurbishment of Isaac Maddox House as an Enterprise Centre.
Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy Infrastructure and Skills said, “Today’s decision moves us a step closer to delivering our vision for Shrub Hill and will stimulate the wider regeneration of the Shrub Hill Quarter as a whole.
“The combination of improved public spaces and the redevelopment of Isaac Maddox House will act as a catalyst to business start-up and growth. The new Enterprise Centre will provide a range of business spaces alongside the development of new housing by the canal.
“It is an exciting time for this ambitious multi-million-pound redevelopment, which seeks to deliver a prosperous Worcester with stronger and better-connected communities for future generations.”
Cllr Robyn Norfolk, Chair of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Development Committee, said, “We are very pleased to be working in close collaboration with Worcestershire County Council to deliver this major regeneration project. The work in the Shrub Hill Quarter will deliver new homes and more employment for Worcester’s residents.”
The Shrub hill Industrial Estate was purchased by Worcestershire County Council in November 2020.
In June 2021, Worcester City Council received an offer from the Towns Fund and proposed that £10m would be allocated to Shrub Hill Regeneration. The Towns Fund is a UK Government fund investing in towns as part of the government’s plan to level up our regions.
The County Council continues to develop the Shrub Hill Station Masterplan, to inform the phased development of Shrub Hill Station.
