SWARCO installs safety solution in its UK home village

Traffic technology specialist SWARCO has specified and installed an intelligent and reliable Vehicle Activated Sign to warn drivers of high speeds and advise on the 30mph speed limit in place, as they enter the village of Melsonby, North Yorkshire, where SWARCO Traffic is situated.

Melsonby Parish Council says it needed to raise speed awareness to drivers entering the village, which is situated at the bottom of a bank, and in particular, drivers arriving directly from the A66 trunk road.

As a permitted supplier to the council, SWARCO Traffic specified and installed a reliable VAS, programmed with two alternating messages – ‘SLOW DOWN’ followed by a ‘30’ speed limit roundel – to provide speed warnings.

The signs use a radar to detect vehicle speeds and use an energy efficient LED display to show the message to oncoming drivers, as well as being equipped with data logging to provide statistical feedback on the number of activations, vehicle speeds and volumes.

David Mutch, Contracts Controller at SWARCO Traffic, said, “Melsonby Parish Council needed to find a solution to help remind drivers entering Melsonby to watch their speed and respect the limits in place, there is no excuse for absent-mindedness but signage can help kill speed. Our VAS are highly reliable, as well as being easy to monitor and maintain.

“With our new offices based just outside the village, this job was particularly close to home,” David continues. “It further enhances our commitment to the local area and safety of local residents.”
