A senior executive from navigation and mapping company TomTom has told the Highways Voices podcast how the company is harnessing AI to help it build products for automated vehicles.
Ralf-Peter Schäfer, who is Vice President, Traffic and Travel Information was speaking on the podcast from the ITS Australia Summit in the Gold Coast, where TomTom is exhibiting.
“We are a big, big player in building products for automation of the car – autopilot, ADAS systems,” he said. “You’re building a map with high definition features, the navigation software, ADAS system, but also the relevant services on top of traffic, hazard warning, speed information, everything, what matters to enable safe driving of an autonomous car.”
He explained that the company is harnessing Artificial Intelligence because “AI is a tool to help us to go faster, to make better algorithms and to accelerate our development and make better products,” but that “it’s still the same foundation – you need a good map.”
Mr Schäfer also talks about the company’s support for Government and how its data is being used in vital before-and-after comparisons.
