Transport recognised in King’s New Year Honours

The former Department for Transport Chief Scientist Professor Sarah Sharples, and Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester, Vernon Everitt, have both been made CBEs in the King’s New Year Honours List.

They’ve among a host of transport professionals which also includes popular intelligent transport systems consultant Andy Graham, who is an MBE.

Professor Sharples (pictured), who is now Vice President and Dean of Science and Engineering, University of Manchester, was honoured for services to Transportation, to Manufacturing Research and to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

She led research in transport, manufacturing and healthcare, and cthe Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Connected Everything Network Plus. She founded and is co-director of the EPSRC Horizon Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), and has led research programmes examining implementation of new technologies in rail, highways and aviation.

Mr Everitt was honoured for his outstanding contribution to public transport.  As Transport Commissioner and Chair of Transport for Greater Manchester’s Executive Boad, Vernon has played a pivotal role in the delivery of major transport improvements for the city region’s communities. 

Advising Mayor Andy Burnham and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, he has led the development and delivery of the Bee Network – the city region’s joined-up public transport system bringing together buses, trams, and trains with better customer service, fares and ticketing and modern data analytics.

Andy Graham MBE, who is the principal of White Willow Consulting has been recognised for his “services to transport safety and efficiency”.

Ian Graham King, lately Chief Executive Officer, BAE Systems and Lead Non-Executive Director, Department for Transport. For services to the Transport and Defence Sectors.

Rupesh Mohan Mehta, lately Director, Planning, Department for Transport. For services to Transport Planning.

OBE:

Jane Cole, Managing Director, Blackpool Transport Services Ltd. For services to Public Transport and to the community in Blackpool.

Johanna Claire Field Gowans (Jo Field), Chair, Women in Transport. For services to Diversity and Inclusion in Transport.

MBE:

David John Astill, Managing Director, Nottingham City Transport. For services to Public Transport.

Jonathan Ross Tear, Head of Public Body Reviews, Department for Transport. For services to Diversity and Inclusion, and to Charity.
