The Tyne Tunnels’ automated fire suppression system has been activated in a live incident for the first time, after a vehicle caught fire in the southbound tunnel on Saturday 24 October.

In a post on LinkedIn, tunnel operator TT2 said its MIST System activated as designed, suppressing the fire and controlling conditions inside the tunnel before crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service arrived.

TT2’s on-site first response team worked alongside the emergency services to manage the incident and safely remove the vehicle. The incident was resolved within an hour, with no reported injuries and no requirement for attendance by the North East Ambulance Service.

The operator said the incident demonstrated the importance of investment in tunnel safety systems and their ongoing maintenance.

The Tyne Tunnels’ fixed fire suppression system uses high-pressure water mist to help control fires and limit their spread. Installed in both tunnel bores, the system can target the affected fire zone and adjacent zones to help manage conditions in the event of an incident.

TT2 said the tunnels receive no funding from local authorities or government budgets, with toll revenue essential to maintaining the infrastructure and its safety systems.

The operator also thanked its operational delivery team and the emergency services for their response.
