A new video has premiered at the Transport Technology Forum Autumn Update in Birmingham showcasing how the Department for Transport’s Traffic Signals Obsolescence Grant has been used to improve a key corridor in Rotherham.
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council was one of the recipients of a share of the £30 million shared among councils across England in 2024 for upgrades to obsolete traffic signals, alongside another £20 million in the “Green Light Fund”. Rotherham received nearly £600,000 to fund a range of solutions on the A631, including upgrading traffic signal systems and replacing equipment to improve reliability, increase functionality and reduce energy consumption.
The video shows how key junctions along the corridor were improved and how that has led not only to better traffic flow, but a better experience for pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers.
The lessons learned in Rotherham will now be used more widely across South Yorkshire, while the Department for Transport is hoping to use projects like the one in Rotherham to build business cases for more traffic signals infrastructure funding.
