West Sussex Council is commencing its scheme to replace thousands of streetlights with energy-saving LEDs. The Council says it will begin the programme this month as part of a four-year, £24m project.
According to The Argus, the work will modernise the network and cut its environmental impact and will be split into eight stages, beginning in the area where the lights use the most energy, and taking six months at a time.
Phase One will begin across the wider Crawley area and will be completed by August this year.
The final phase encompasses the area surrounding Chichester, and should be complete by February 2030.
Officials say the new lights will cut annual energy use by more than 10.7 million kWh by 2029, which should reduce carbon emissions by about 1,633 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Each new lamp will also be fitted with a smart control node.
