Key transport improvements are set to begin in Marker Harborough, Leicestershire, on Monday 17 August, with upgrades designed to reduce traffic congestion, support active travel and modernise signs and signals on Rockingham Road.
This work is phase one in a series of wider upgrades, which will help junctions cope better with traffic flow as Harborough grows and develops and make walking and cycling easier, safer and more appealing for residents.
Funded by Section 106 developer contributions and Active Travel England, improvements will include; widened footways, new side road crossings with raised speed tables and smarter, redesigned junctions.
The new raised speed tables will feature intelligent road studs which flash to warn drivers when pedestrians and cyclists are crossing the road. This is the first use of this new technology in Leicestershire.
“It’s fantastic to see phase one of the Market Harborough Transport Programme get underway. The council has worked hard to secure outside funding for this work, which delivers great value for taxpayers and reduces pressure on budgets,” said Andrew Hamilton-Gray, Cabinet Member for Highways.
Work will begin first at the Gores Lane junction, with the upgraded traffic signal junction expected to be completed by the end of November. The remainder of phase one is expected to finish in late March 2027.
