The proposed British Standard, ‘BS 9228 – Recycling of roads and other paved areas using bitumen emulsion or foamed bitumen – Materials, production, installation and product type testing – Specification’, is now out for public consultation until 3 February 2021.
The proposed standard specifies the requirements for road surfacing materials processed using either bituminous emulsion or foamed bitumen. It covers their design and composition, production, installation and performance testing.
In addition, the new standard includes mixtures prepared using bituminous binders that may also contain hydraulic material. BS 9228 also describes a number of methods by which existing material in the road or other paved areas is either processed in-situ or uses recycled material processed ex-situ.
Commenting on the proposed standard, Paul Boss, Chief Executive of the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA), said: “RSTA members were heavily involved in the development and drafting of BS 9228 for bitumen emulsion and foamed bitumen. Both offer cost effective and material efficient road surface treatment and the availability of this standard will help to forward their use.”
