E-scooter trial starts in Wandsworth

Wandsworth Council has joined TfL’s rental e-scooter trial, with Lime and Voi operating in the borough as of today, Monday 12 May. This is a trial only, and the council will be monitoring its impact closely.

The trial is being run by TfL, Lime, and Voi with the permission of the council, and makes use of 170 dedicated e-scooter parking bays across Wandsworth. E-scooters will be available for rent in Wandsworth from these dedicated bays only – all trips must start and end in a dedicated bay, unlike e-bikes, which can be parked more flexibly. Users must also hold a valid driving license in order to rent an e-scooter, and both Voi and Lime are offering free helmets to anyone who requests one.

This scheme is the only legal way to ride an e-scooter on public roads in the borough. Private e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads, pavements, and cycle lanes.

“We’re committed to making it easier for people to safely travel around Wandsworth in cleaner, greener ways,” says a council statement. “This trial forms part of our wider efforts to reduce reliance on cars for short trips, helping to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality. Encouraging micromobility options like cycle hire and e-scooters supports our goal of becoming a net-zero borough by 2043.

“We are investing in better walking and cycling routes, improved public transport links, and safer streets so that residents have real alternatives to car travel. If this trial proves to be a safe and effective option, it could help more people make sustainable transport choices.”

Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“We want to support people in Wandsworth to make more sustainable travel choices if they can, and this e-scooter trial will allow us to see if rental e-scooters can offer a safe and convenient alternative to car journeys. We’ll be monitoring the trial closely and listening to residents’ feedback to make sure it works for everyone in the borough.”

James Bolton, Voi’s UK General Manager added:

“We’re 100% committed to running a responsible pilot that keeps pavements clear. Safety is Voi’s top priority – we’re committed to rider training, high-quality vehicles, and working with the community to create a scheme that works for all”.
