The residents of Stone, Kent are being invited to have their say on proposed improvements to the A226 London Road, designed to make it easier and safer to walk, wheel and cycle while keeping traffic moving.
Kent County Council (KCC), working in partnership with Dartford Borough Council and Stone Town Council, is launching a public consultation on a proposed active travel scheme along a 1.4-mile section of London Road between the Cotton Lane junction and St Clements Way Roundabout.
The proposals aim to create safer and more accessible routes linking Stone with Dartford town centre, Greenhithe and Ebbsfleet, while supporting healthier journeys, reducing congestion and pollution, and helping to lower carbon emissions.
The scheme has been developed following feedback received during a Dartford Borough Council consultation in 2024 and includes a range of measures to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
KCC received £100,000 from Active Travel England’s Local Transport Fund to develop the scheme design. The project is currently estimated to cost £2.5 million. If the scheme goes ahead, KCC will finalise the detailed design and confirm the full cost before applying to Active Travel England for construction funding.
Following the consultation, feedback will be reviewed to help inform decisions on how the project should proceed. Spencer Dixon, KCC’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
“London Road is an important route connecting homes, schools, shops, businesses and public transport so it’s vital that it works safely and effectively for everyone who uses it.
“We are proposing changes to make better use of the existing space, including improved pathways, new cycle lanes, safer crossings, more greenery, and changes to parking and speed limits. We want to hear from people who regularly use the road before any decisions are made, so I would encourage people to take a look at the proposals and share their views.”
